L.A. "Keeping It Real" with Antionette Howard
In 2004 there were rumblings about a sophomore named Antionette Howard at South Gwinnett H.S. in Snellville, GA who was causing a lot of commotion on the court, so like we do we checked her out and saw the potential.
Well this past season as a junior that same young lady exploded like a comet wrecking havoc on all the teams she faced. I got a chance to sit down with Howard who was named to the 4SHOT Hoops All-State 2nd Team this past season for a little session of “Keeping It Real”.
Antionette Howard: Antionette is a 6’-0” Shooting Guard or Small Forward who attends South Gwinnett H.S. in Snellville, GA and is a member of the Class of 2007. Her brother Delano Howard played on South Gwinnett’s 2005 state championship team and will be attending Georgia State this fall on a basketball scholarship.
L.A.: “Who have been some of the most influential people in your life”? Antionette: “I would have to say the most influential people in my life are my family and closest friends. My mother and father motivate me a lot and they push me to the limit…”
L.A.: “What have been some of the more memorable moments in your career so far? Antionette: “The most memorable moment in my career so far is making it to the championship. Being so close and then losing makes me hungrier. And next year I have the opportunity to have one more shot at it.”
L.A.: “What moment(s) would you most like to forget in your career? Antionette: “Losing state.”
L.A.: “What is the strongest part of your game?” Antionette: “I think the strongest part of my game is my versatility.”
L.A.: “What do you think you need to work on to take your game to the next level?” Antionette: “Being consistent. Giving everything I have every time I lace up.”
L.A.: “Your brother Delano Howard (Georgia State signee) played on South Gwinnett’s state championship team in 2005, what type of advise has he given you on your game and handling the pressures of being heavily recruited?” Antionette: “He told me to just go out there and take advantage of the moment. And to play hard like my life depended on it. As for recruiting, my brother from another mother, Mike Mercer told me to make sure that the decision that I make is for me, and not someone else.”
L.A.: “What type of personal goals have you set for next season?” Antionette: “I plan to work hard and be consistent and help lead my team to a state championship.”
L.A.: “Who has been one of the toughest players you have had to guard and who is the best high school player you personally have ever seen?” Antionette: “The toughest person that I have ever guarded is Nikitta Gartrell. The best high school player that I have ever seen would have to be Tasha Humphrey (UGA) and Louis Williams (South Gwinnett H.S./Philadelphia 76er’s).”
L.A.: “Without tipping your hand, give me the names of some colleges that you would like to play for?” Antionette: “As of right now I’m undecided.”
L.A.: “Tell me something about yourself that people wouldn’t know by just looking at you? Antionette: “I’m cool and down to earth. And I am also pretty funny.”
L.A.: “Do you have a nickname?” Antionette: “Nette”… It stands for nothing but NETTE!”
L.A.: “How does summer ball (AAU) differ from the regular season?” Antionette: “There’s a lot more talent.”
L.A.: “Most AAU Teams have players that play in their natural position unlike in high school where you usually play out of position. What position do you think you would like to play at the next level?” Antionette: “At the next level I can see myself playing at the 2 or 3.”
L.A.: “What makes you a BALLER and not a Player ?” (at 4SHOT we think Players just go out on the court and play like every other player on the floor, while a BALLER can take over the game, not in a selfish way but they can dominate at “a whole nother’ level)” Antionette: “My ability to score at will and see the floor.”

L.A.: “If you were not playing basketball what would you be doing now?” Antionette: “WHOA! Let’s not take that into consideration.”
