Week 8 Recaps

Week 8 of high school football saw teams throughout the state continue to separate themselves from the pack.  With teams gearing up for postseason play, things are heating up.  Unbeatens put their perfect records on the line and perennial powerhouses try to reclaim their place in the upper echelon list of teams in the state.  Let’s take a look at who did what in another exciting week of high school football in the state of Georgia.

Chamblee 49 – Grady 21

Chamblee, GA

Chamblee passed yet another test as they continued their rise up the Class 5B-AAA rankings by manhandling the Grady Grey Knights.  The Bulldogs accumulated over 350 yards on the ground.  After senior running back, Malcolm Beyah was knocked out of the game, Malcolm Giles filled his shoes easily by rushing for 102 yards on 14 carries.  Junior quarterback Garrett Williams continued his strong play by running the option to near perfection and keeping his Bulldogs on track for a historic season.

Williams finished the night with 86 yards on 12 carries and one score.  Junior Warren Norman led all Bulldogs with three touchdowns.  And certainly not to be one that’s left out, junior Darius Jones ran for 113 yards and was responsible for three scores of his own.  Chamblee now heads into an matchup of undefeated teams as they prepare to face Westminister.  So far, Williams and his Bulldogs are showing why they belong.

Parkview 21 – Berkmar 7

Lilburn, GA

Berkmar found themselves up 7-0 at the start of the second half and on the verge of breaking a seven game losing streak against its crosstown rival.  Then the floodgates opened.  Parkview was able to capitalize off of a Berkmar fumble and a short punt to quickly go up 14-7.

The Panthers added one more score to secure the win, but it may be bittersweet for Parkview.  The Panthers appeared to have lost quarterback, Clayton Wilkin for the remainder of the season to a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament.

Brookwood 42 – South Gwinnett 0

Lilburn, GA

After dropping its first two contests of the season, Brookwood continued to show its dominance with a convincing win against South Gwinnett.  All-State running back, Kenny Miles, led the way for the Broncos 186 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

The Broncos had other contributors in this route, as well.  Marvis Lane finished with 4 carries for 160 yards and a score, while Brice Smith scored on a 37-yard strike from quarterback Terence Davis.  The Brookwood did its job as well, keeping South Gwinnett scoreless.

Northside-Warner Robins 31 – Upson-Lee 26

Thomaston, GA

Northside-Warner Robins had been cruising all season but found themselves in a battle early against the Knights of Upson-Lee.  Upson-Lee jumped out to an early 14-0 lead off of a 69-yard scamper by Quintin Lamar and a 1-yard score by Phillip Searcy.

Things also got a little shaky when the Eagles lost their starting quarterback, Marques Ivory, in the first half and Mr. Scoring Machine, Tijuan Green in the third quarter.  The Eagles and Green were able to recover as he scored the final touchdown to put Warner-Robins up for good.

St. Pius 25 – SW Dekalb 7

Clarkston, GA

St. Pius gave head coach Paul Standard his 50th victory as they capitalized off of a couple Southwest miscues to cruise to a 25-7 win.    The Golden Knights found the going fairly easy as they had the Panthers scoreless in the first half.  Southwest was able to crack the scoreboard near the end of the third quarter, but by then it was already all she wrote.

North Gwinnett 29 – South Forsyth 6

Cummings, GA

With their starting quarterback out because of a concussion and an undefeated record on the line, North Gwinnett appeared to have the odds stacked up against them.  After ten consecutive completions by backup quarterback Patrick Thompson to start off the game, everyone seemed to be put at ease.

Thompson orchestrated the Bulldogs’ spread offense like a veteran and helped give North Gwinnett a 22-6 lead at the half.   The Bulldogs’ Tyler Jarry finished the night with 152 total yards and two touchdowns as North was able to keep their unblemished record in tact.

Norcross 24 – Mill Creek 10

Duluth, GA

Norcross came off of its bye week showing no signs of rust as they easily handled Mill Creek.   Senior Brice Butler continued to show why he’ll strapping up for the Trojans of USC, finishing with seven catches for 115 yards with two scores and a pick.  Butler managed to beat the Hawk secondary for a 40-yard score that put the Blue Devils up 14-0 and also put Mill Creek on the ropes.  The knockout blow came at the end of the half when senior standout, Devonta Bolton picked off a Zach Landis pass at his own goal line to end a promising Mill Creek drive.

Lowndes 18 – Valdosta 8

Valdosta, GA

For the past three seasons, the Winnersville Classic has belonged to Lowndes.  This year, Valdosta looked to put an end to the Vikings; streak.  Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.  Lowndes went up early on a 17-yard score by Tavaris Williams and a two-point conversion and the Viking defense held the fort the rest of the way.  Valdosta hit paydirt late but the game was already decided in the Vikings favor.
