Wolves in Tigers Territory

Howard Thompkins controlled the paint but Manny Atkins controlled the sky.

The first game of the day between the Tucker “Tigers” and the Wesleyan “Wolves” would feature 3 stellar division 1 athletes. Starting with non other than University of Georgia signee Howard Thompkins, with his 18 first half points along with 5 dunks, you could tell early that it’s was going to be a long day for the Tigers. Thompkins teammate Tanner Smith headed to the University of Clemson drain in 10 first half points to give them the lead at halftime 38-31.

 

Super junior Manny Atkins would contribute 16 points for Tucker in the first half, nailing 3 three-pointers to keep the Tigers close. Aric Miller would drain a three-pointer to give the Tigers their first lead of the game 55-54 with 6:45 to go in the fourth period. The Wolves would answer back with 2 points in the paint by Thompkins but Miller would continue with 5 straight points to extend the lead to 4 points 60-56.  With 28 seconds left in the game the Wolves would be down by 3 points. Tanner would attempt a three-pointer to maybe force it in to overtime, unfortunately he missed and Thompkins attempted on a desperation three pointer would come up short. The Tigers clawed their way to the victory by 4 points. Good job by both teams.

 

Final Score:  Tucker 73 Wesleyan 69

Wolverines Enter Wildcats Country Territory

The Wildcats “Triple Threat” Phil Taylor, Dequan Jones and Richard Howell too much.

 

Phil Taylor - Player of the Game!
In the third game of the Martin Luther King Classic, the Wheeler “Wildcats” would be featured as the favorites in the hometown whites and the Wolverines would be in Wildcat country in the black jerseys. Nevertheless, the game must be played in the USA.

 

The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a thunderous dunk by Dequan Jones 7:05 to go in the first period. Phil Taylor would hit the buzzer beater to end the first period with the Wildcats up 28-15. The bench would come in to put the squeeze on the Wolverines with 8 first period points from Karl Cochran.

 

In the second period, the crowd would fill the gym to standing room only. The Wolverines would crash the boards and go on a 15-6 run behind the three point shooting of Justin Allen. Stephen Hill for the Wolverines would dunk over 2 Wildcats defenders and Mfon Udofia would connect from the line to cut the lead to one point with 1:15 left in the first half 33-34. The Wildcats felt as if that was too close as Taylor drain his third three-pointer of the game ending the first half 41-33 to put Wheeler up 8 points.

The Wolverines would tie the game at 56 points on a pull up jumper by Mfon with 7:21 left in the game. The Wolverines would take their first lead of the game with a shot off the glass by Hill with 6:45 remaining 58-56. The Wildcats fans would go crazy after Dequan Jones would throw down another thunderous dunk to retake the lead. The Wolverines would try to stay close with 2 last minute three pointers by Justin but the victory was sealed by the Wildcats.

 

Final Score:  Wheeler 82  Miller Grove 77

Columbia vs. McEachern

McEachern upends Columbia
Golden dazzles in 26 point performance

 

Sophomore Trae Golden put on a sparkling 26 point performance.
With the likes of Columbia’s Travis Leslie, David Forrest, Darius Morrow and McEachern’s Trae Golden, Darius Garrett and Josh Brown on the floor it’s no wonder the fans were buzzing with every dazzling play each player made.

Columbia jumped out to a 9-3 lead on a three-pointer by their up and coming sophomore JerShon Cobb but McEachern led by their outstanding sophomore guard Trae Golden cut the lead to 12-8.

 

Columbia reserve Lorenzo Jones came in and immediately made an impact with a steal and basket to give the Eagles a 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

 

Golden, Forrest and Morrow continued to pace the Indians but it was the play of McEachern’s reserves Duran Blue, Chris Moore and Deleon Gist that gave the Indians a big lift in the second quarter. A basket by Blue tied the game at 28-28 with 4:11 left in half.

 

McEachern finally gained the lead when Gist scored a pair of baskets in the last minute of the half to put his team in front 38-34.    

 

Right before the horn sounded to end the half they almost had to turn the lights out when Leslie skied above the rim on a follow-up but just missed the slam; but it still brought the crowd to their feet. The half ended with McEachern leading 38-34.

The action continued to be hot and heavy as the third quarter got underway, Forrest scored and made a sweet assist to Cobb. McEachern countered with Golden and Brown who made some “Hot Sauce” moves of their own. The action was equally as intense in the paint as Morrow and Garrett got after each other.

Blue score off a nice assist from Garrett to make the score 49-43 McEachern with 1:24 left in the quarter. Moore, who did an outstanding job on the glass hit two free-throws at the end of the third quarter to push the Indian’s lead to 53-45.

Columbia came out at the start of the forth quarter smoking, a three by Forrest started an 8 point run as the Eagles cut the lead to 58-56. 

 

After a McEachern timeout Brown and Garrett scored to up the lead to 62-58. Golden, who has eyes in the back of his head made another sweet assist, hitting Moore to make it 65-58.

 

With :58 seconds left Golden drove the baseline and threw it down and then down the stretch he canned 8 straight free-throws as the Indians went on to an impressive 79-69 victory.

McEachern: Trae Golden scored a game high 26 points to lead McEachern. Darrius Garrett added 17 and Josh Brown finished with 10.

Columbia: David Forrest scored 22 to pace Columbia. Travis Leslie had 15 while Darrius Morrow and Kenny Mitchell each finished with 11.

Marietta came out firing as the took on home-standing Centennial in the last of 4 games played in the M.L. King Holiday “A Tribute to a King Classic Tournament”. Senior

drilled a pair of three-pointers and teammates JJ Brantton and Chris Tanzy each buried one as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 19-5 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter the Knights shook off the freeze and got back into the game; junior
Alex Coxworth
led the way nailing a pair of three’s as they cut the lead to 25-11.

didn’t score a lot of points in the first half but his floor leadership proved to be a lot more valuable as he made a pair of sweet assists to teammate London Carr.

Marietta was able to stave off the Centennial charge behind the second quarter scoring of Tanzy and Barrington Fugerson as they took a 32-25 lead into the half.

Brown turned up his game in the second half, especially on the offensive end scoring 14 of his team high 18 points. The Knights tied the score a 48-48 with a little under 5:00 minutes to play but the Blue Devils who are a pretty discipline group dug in and went on to a hard fought 63-59 win.

 

Jennings tied Brown for game high scoring honors with 18 for Marietta.
