Copelan’s three-pointer sinks Lady Lions

ML King H.S. – Decatur, GA

Union Grove Sr.-Christina Carlis scored a gae high 20 points to lead her team.

Decatur, GA - It was Senior Night at ML King Jr. High School on Friday night so it was not surprising when the Lady Lions hit the floor with a lot of energy, especially senior Ashley Jennings who scored 6 quick points. Union Grove countered with a couple of seniors of their own in Christina Carlis and DeJerecka Hines, both scored 5 points in the first quarter but they still trailed ML King 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Play was a little erratic in the second quarter as the team started turning the ball over. Carlis hit a three-pointer to give Union Grove the lead but ML King came right back getting a pair of big baskets from Candace Hollingsworth to tie the game at 25-25 heading into the half.

Union Grove got three-pointers from D. Copelan and A. Adams to take a 34-33 lead with just over 4:00 minutes left in the third quarter.

Needing a spark the Lady Lions turned to another senior, 5-8 Christina Page. Page started going off as she scored 11 third quarter points, including a three-pointer as the Lady Lions retook the lead 40-38.

Things really started heating in the forth quarter, Carlis started taking over the scoring load and teammates Hines and Courtney White started pounding the glass. Carlis’s steal and basket tied the game at 42-42 with 6:53 left to play.

Jennings started flowing again for the Lady Lions, her fastbreak basket put ML King back in front 46-44. With 2:04 left on the clock Carlis scored again to give the Lady Wolverines a 50-49 lead.
One more time the lead switched back as Page knocked down a jumper.

With 49.5 seconds to play Copelan knocked down a huge three-pointer over the outstretched arm of Hollingsworth to put Union Grove up 53-51.

A couple of ML King turnovers during the last few seconds of the game killed them, Carlis and White both seniors, hit free-throws to give the Union Grove’s seniors a 56-51 win on ML King’s Senior Night.
