Columbia “Eagles” vs. Fayette County “Tigers”

Eagles reclaim the Class 4-A title

The game between the Columbia High School “Eagles” versus the Fayette County High School “Tigers” was a game in which the Eagles look to grab after losing to the Tucker Tigers in last years finals. Both team had their stars in Travis Leslie (Columbia) and Noel Johnson (Fayette Co.). At the end of the day, the game had to be played and a Class 4-A champion had to be crown.

The first period was on its way so fast that it was hard to keep up with the scoring. The Tigers Cuincy Carruthers would drain two big three pointers and the Eagles Kenny Mitchell would go for 8 points in the paint. The first period would end with the score Columbia 14 Fayette 12.

The second period would feature 5 straight points by the Tigers Addison Flynn but Travis Leslie wouldn’t let that happen. After a quick basket by Jarrod Houston head coach Andre Flynn would call timeout after a basket for the Tigers. Noel Johnson would pick up his third foul with 1:01 left in the first half as Antonio Wilson goes to the line for 2 free throws to put the Eagles up 34-27.

In the third period the Tigers would take their first lead on a basket by Terrence Turner 43-42 on a put back with 2:45 left.  The Eagles would weather the threat and finish by 2 points to end the third period 47-45.

The Tigers would refuse to go away as they took the lead on 2 free throws by Carruthers. Then came the Eagles flying high on five straight points by Darrius Morrow 56-51. The Eagles MVP Mitchell would get back into the scoring as the time move to 3:00 left in the game to move the score to 58-52. Noel would drain a three pointer to keep the Tigers right in it 58-55. The nail in the coffin would be the three points by Jershon Cobb that would seal the deal.

The Columbia Eagles reclaim the class 4-A state championship. Great job by both teams, you both are winners.

Final Score:  Columbia 69  Fayette County 63
